WITNESS makes it possible for anyone, anywhere to use video and technology to protect and defend human rights. For their annual fundraising gala, they wanted to include an interactive artistic element that echoed their mission. I wanted to create an installation that encouraged guests to think about the realities they face as human rights defenders and their dreams for a better tomorrow.
We decided on an installation titled 1 Reality, 2 Dreams which encouraged guests to think of one reality to which they’d like to bring change, and then dream of two solutions that would help achieve it. The messaging supported the guest speakers and tied into the director’s presentation on the nonprofit’s accomplishments. The form of the project alsoo encouraged dreaming: After creating their art, guests reached up to hang it among the others floating above their heads.

WITNESS Gala: A guest’s art piece on the installation
The interactive element was two-part: First, illustrating the dream/solution on an individual cube, and second, hanging it above on the ceiling of the installation. The act of hanging it made everyone glance upwards, and walking through it felt like daydreaming.
We used the design and layout from my initial installation for an event for Drury Design Dynamics, and modified the artistic aspect for evening display. Instead of paper cubes down the sides of the piece, I constructed a chandelier of light up acrylic cubes that mimicked the guests’ wooden cubes.
